Located in the Pluma Hidalgo region of the southwest Sierra Madre Sur mountains of Oaxaca, the Hotel Refugio is situated on a working coffee plantation at 800-1000 meters altitude above sea level, in an extensive virgin tropical forest preserve. This is one of the world’s premier coffee-growing regions due to the combination of ocean breezes and the ancient tropical forest canopy. Travelers with an interest in the nature will enjoy an extensive variety of both flora and fauna - especially birds - while photographers and painters will appreciate the thick forest with its enormous trees, leaf-carpeted paths, streams and rivers. The relaxed pace and family atmosphere of the finca is excellent for those who
want tranquility in a very beautiful natural environment. The climate is mildly humid (more so, of course, in the rainy season), with cool mornings and evenings, and medium-hot days. (Average, Feb: 24°C / 75°F) Expect almost no rain from November through April, with rains (some powerful thunderstorms) starting in late April, and continuing through October.
The hotel itself has 25 rooms with an overall capacity of 50 - 60 persons. Services include the hotel restaruant offering authentic Mexican cuisine - taking advantage of fish farms on the plantation, fresh-water shrimp from the nearby river, farm chicken and beef - as well as the plantation’s spring water, tropical fruits and world-class organic coffee. Of course, we are happy to accommodate vegetarian
and religious food requirements, if at all possible. Other services
include swimming pool, auditorium for meetings or parties, hiking guide or driver service to nearby points of interest, and playing fields. Rental vehicles are available, as well, and we can arrange for the delivery of a vehicle to you at various airports. As a working finca, we offer direct purchase, and shipment, of our fine coffee to the consumer, or wholesale.
Locally, there are many pristine areas of interest,
both in the Pluma Hidalgo region (where foresting is prohibited) and at the beach. Also available are resort towns - such as Huatulco, at a forty-minute drive - which offer some of Mexico’s most beautiful bays and beaches. You’ll find fishing, diving, rafting, river kayaking, golf, whale and turtle watching, massage, temezcal (sauna), herbalists, nightlife venues, in addition to the many local crafts, markets and cultural events which highlight the famous sociability and friendliness of the Mexican people. At two hour’s drive is Puerto Escondido, a famous surfer’s beach; continue on another half-hour to Chacagua, an extensive lagoon preserve, where small-boat tours are available.
Travel to El Refugio:
From Oaxaca or Huatulco: We reccommend the “Halcones de Huatulco” van service, between Oaxaca and Huatulco, which passes through Pluma Hidalgo. It is best to make reservations a day in advance. Tell them you want to get off at “El Refugio”, in Pluma Hidalgo. “Halcones de Huatulco” is located in Oaxaca at: Av. Trujano #600 on the corner with Galeana, in the center of Oaxaca. Tel: (01 951) 514.9068 and in Huatulco at Av. Guamuchil, Depto. 1-A S/N, Edificio Beta Centauro, La Crucesita, Santa Cruz Huatulco. Tel: (01 958) 587.2910
If travelling by bus on the Oaxaca - Pochutla highway (beach destinations), tell the driver you want to get off at “La Copalita” - about 1 1/2 hours from Pochutla (or, 4-5 hrs. from Oaxaca). There, one must catch a pickup or taxi to Pluma Hidalgo. Don’t worry - all the local drivers know where it is!
By private car on the Oaxaca - Pochutla highway, take the turnoff at the “Copalita” for “Pluma Hidalgo / San Mateo Piñas”. Follow this route for about one hour, and pass by the turnoff for Pluma Hidalgo - the Hotel Refugio is about six kilometers after the turnoff. Look for a sign that says: “Finca el Refugio”.
From Santa Maria Huatulco, take the Huatulco - Pluma Hidalgo highway, and look for a sign that says: “Hotel en el Campo - Finca el Refugio”, which is at 19 Km. from Santa Maria Huatulco.
